Atkins Diet Misconceptions: Low Carb and Diabetes (Part 2)

This video is the second half of the Atkins Diet Misconception: Diabetes series. If you have not seen Part 1, please watch it here:

The last video dealt with case damning the existing treatment or recommendations to follow a high carb diet managed with ever increasing doses of insulin. This video deals with the evidence for rather managing it with a low carb lifestyle. There are two great studies for advocating this method.

1:) Dietary carbohydrate restriction in type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome: time for a critical appraisal
Nutrition and Metabolism(Lond) 2008; 5: 9.
Numerous authors including Richard Bertstein, Mary Vernon, Jeff Volek, Eric Westman

http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=2359752&tool=pmcentrez

Conducted Multi-center trial in which 63 obese men and women were randomly assigned to either diet, 21 Low Carb, 21 Control, 21 High Carb for a one year study.
This discussion focuses on type 2 diabetes but many of the principles will apply to metabolic syndrome and possibly to type 1 as well[6,7].
1. Carbohydrate restriction improves glycemic control, the primary target of nutritional therapy and reduces insulin fluctuations.
2. Carbohydrate-restricted diets are at least as effective for weight loss as low-fat diets.
3. Substitution of fat for carbohydrate is generally beneficial for markers for and incidence of CVD.
4. Carbohydrate restriction improves the features of metabolic syndrome.
An important idea guiding current medical thinking is that clustering of seemingly disparate physiologic states, obesity, atherogenic dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia and hypertension, termed metabolic syndrome (MetS) suggests a common underlying cause. A recent review showed that carbohydrate restriction improves all of these markers[24].
5. Beneficial effects of carbohydrate restriction do not require weight loss. It’s not simply a weight loss argument or due to people losing weight do they achieve the benefits.

2.) Low-carbohydrate diet in type 2 diabetes: stable improvement of bodyweight and glycemic control during 44 months follow-up

Conclusion:
There is now little evidence for the claim that a fat-reduced diet for weight reduction has any particular value beyond caloric counting [10]. Current dietary recommendations seem to be a major part of their problem rather than being part of the solution. Carbohydrate restriction, however, reverses or neutralises all aspects of the metabolic syndrome [20,21].

    @Catherine8raw Good …
    @Catherine8raw Good call – there is little reason to select lean cuts of meat exclusively on Atkins. A well-marbled piece of meat is much tastier as well.

  2. Catherine8raw says:

    Bofulf is correct. …
    Bofulf is correct. Anyone of you that wants to do this diet to control blood sugars is on the right track! BUT We should not eat lots of protein because is highly dangerous, therefore if you eat a high fat diet like Bofulf does, you’ll lose weight, control your blood sugars, get rid of arthritis, bleeding gums, fungal toe nails, not get illness, and feel great! DON’T DO WHAT I DID, EAT LOTS OF LEAN PROTEIN, its too acidic and expensive! Eat beef lard, raw butter, some protein and veggies :)

  3. Catherine8raw says:

    A high protein, low …
    A high protein, low fat, low carb diet, has given me arthritis by eating too much protein, too little lubricating fats, dried up my joints due to jogging for months on a low fat diet. I tested my pH on high protein = 5-5.5, as an experiment I ate lots of beef lard oneday and found my urine pH8! I am shocked & I have learnt AT LAST saturated fats are good for our health, stops acidity of meat, meat is high in phosphorus = phosphuric acid, which leaches Ca/Mg from bones, prtoein should be 30-35!

    @MindofaJedi MY SON …
    @MindofaJedi MY SON HAS TYPE ONE DIABETES SINCE HE WAS 7- DON’T TELL ME THAT HE CAN GET OFF INSULIN …PEOPLE WHO HAVE TYPE 2 CAN ALTER THEIR BLOOD SUGARS THROUGH DIET. PLEASE BE CLEAR WHEN DISCUSSING DIABETES AS TYPE 1 & TYPE 2 ARE VERY VERY DIFFERENT. IT’S LIKE COMPARING A ZIT TO A CANCEROUS TUMOR…WHEN HE FOLLOWS A LOW CARB DIET, HE DOES USE LESS INSULIN…

  5. bowulf says:

    @MindofaJedi I do …
    @MindofaJedi I do have thank the whole frugivore crowd for something…

    Their misinformed science or simply personal beliefs keep the meat prices lower for the rest of us. Thank you!

  6. bowulf says:

    @MindofaJedi It is …
    @MindofaJedi It is apparent that you need to do some unbiased research. If you want to continue your bomb throwing do it somewhere else.

    “humans are herbivores catigorically because we cannot chase down kill or consume animals with our natural equipment ”

    Think all those ancient hunters were getting wrong. I guess their effectiveness and reality interferes with your preconceived beliefs.

    But really – what is the point debating a biased fool? Peace and take your nonsense on the road.

  7. bowulf says:

    @MindofaJedi (cont. …
    @MindofaJedi (cont.) that you look at one that takes in a multi-variate look at the data and tries to understand it. Campbell intentionally did not, and the results are evident. For an idea of a better epidemiological study, look at the Harvard Nurse’s Study that coincidentally also demonstrated that the low carb approach significantly lowered one’s heart risk factors amongst over 20000 nurses.

    Or you can look at the Italian study that found no linkage between meat consumption and cancer.

  8. bowulf says:

    You mean the same …
    You mean the same China Study that showed the linkage between CONSUMING alcohol and smoking LOWERED one’s risk of cancer and heart problems. Should I start drinking and smoking now too? That is the problem with epidemiological studies. It shows links without causality. The China Study also showed the link between wheat consumption and cancer to be higher than that of meat.

    Guess which one Campbell focused on? I would suggest if you want to evaluate epidemiological studies.

  9. MindofaJedi says:

    @bowulf Wow , …
    @bowulf Wow , please do some research . Apparently you either don’t understand evolution or language . Omnivore comes from the latin root word for “to do ” not “to be” . As far as science goes humans are herbivores catigorically because we cannot chase down kill or consume animals with our natural equipment . Try to take down and eat a cow with your hands . You might as well call humans cannibals because we have eaten each other . Read human omnivore the mythical beast .

  10. bowulf says:

    @MindofaJedi All …
    @MindofaJedi All yes, the humans are frugivores meme. Mind you while I scoff at it. Your pH estimates are off. I would suggest you do your research as opposed to spouting other. According to bear biologists, “Black bears depend on strong stomach muscles and low stomach ph (3.5) to break down food.”

    Humans are certainly omnivores and the bacterial fauna in our intestines support that assertion.

    So first get your facts straight, then you can start making assumptions.

  11. MindofaJedi says:

    @bowulf If you …
    @bowulf If you read The China Study , which is by far the largest most comprehensive study on human diet in history , it cleary demonstrates that on a 94% vegetarian diet people thrive while their chances for cancer soar as more meat is added . The formula is simple , more meat = more health problems . Carbs from fruit are very healthy , carbs from high fructose corn syrup are very damaging . Most Americans eat too much sugar , so even Atkins diet could provide some improvement . Peace .

  12. MindofaJedi says:

    @bowulf Nope , …
    @bowulf Nope , refined sugars combined with a damaged pancrease cause diabetes . Humans are frugivores , this is a biological fact . We have a stomache PH of between 4-5 , all omnivores (bears, boars etc) have a stomache ph of 1 . Humans cannot assimilate animal protein nor clear it from the body effeciently .

  13. bowulf says:

    @MindofaJedi …
    @MindofaJedi Richard Bernstein has been listed as diabetes educator of the year and is perhaps more than anyone the leading expert for it. Mary Ross Vernon who worked with Dr. Atkins also is one of the leading experts. She claims within 3 days some diabetics are off medication.

    How about you address the multiple studies in the video as opposed to throwing bombs? Show where the researchers Jorgen Nelsen or Eric Westman and Jeff Volek got it wrong. High carb diets led to this disease.

  14. MindofaJedi says:

    Low carb diets …
    Low carb diets cause diabetes . The one sure cure for diabetes is a high carb vegan diet based on fruit . Cousens is the world’s leading expert on diabetes and many diabetics have gotten off their insulin in 3 weeks at his clinic on a high carb diet . Pancrease damage from animal fats and processed foods causes diabetes .

    @zegonzales: Well, …
    @zegonzales: Well, I mainly stick to fatty meat, eggs and veggies. I do not eat dairy very often, it causes a lot of mucus in my nose and throat, joint inflammation. I do not really eat nuts because I think I have a really mild nut allergy, I also do not seem to digest them very well. I have a sensitive stomach, so I do not eat tomatoes, gives me reflux. Atkins is really a great diet though. When I stick to it I really fell great, mental outlook if much better. Ciao!

  16. zegonzales says:

    Its very easy to …
    Its very easy to make a Atkins pizza these days, there are thousands of recipes out there.

  17. SyeraMiktayee says:

    Likewise. I’d …
    Likewise. I’d suffered from hypoglycemia my entire life. Thanks to Atkins, it’s no longer an issue for me. :)

  18. tickyul says:

    Thank you, I like …
    Thank you, I like your vids. I made a new years resolution to get back in shape. Since the 1st of the year, have been low carbing. My bp was 150/100 before I started. It is still little high, but 130/85 is a great improvement. My skin is slowly clearing up and I am able to exercise a lot better. Bad thing is I love chinese buffets and pizza. Cheers!

  19. bowulf says:

    The good news is …
    The good news is scientist Jeff Volek has proven that most Metabolic Syndrome can be reversed after a consistent low carb diet — literally turning back the clock on all the risk factors. Thank you for providing your story here, and another nail in the coffin of treating it with high levels of carbs.

  20. tickyul says:

    Yep, I defintely …
    Yep, I defintely have metabolic syndrome, Let myself go a bit. I Stopped all junk and am exercising, scale does not want to budge. Even 5 years ago, if I would have done the same thing, pounds would have dropped quickly. Thick abdominal fat, high BP, high LDL, low HDL, prediabetic fasting glucose levels if I start eating too many carbs, just to name a few of the symptoms I have. No ones fault but my own. Carbs are very problematic for me, eat too many and I get constant painful hunger. Cheers!

  21. bosyeux2 says:

    there’s a great …
    there’s a great video on youtube by dr robert lustig “sugar: the bitter truth”. his focus is fructose, but carbs overall are implicated. he researches overweight children.

    it’s long, but a great watch. near the end he shows that saturated fats are not the problem with heart disease, but rather carbs.

  22. bowulf says:

    Keep spreadng the …
    Keep spreadng the good news and never let anyone dismiss your message. It really is more powerful than any video I could ever make on the topic. You have proven and lived everything I talk about, and a shining example!

  23. violentasylum says:

    I was diagnosed …
    I was diagnosed with type ll diabetes earlier this year. I went onto the Atkins NA and after 6 months I noticed a real difference in my diabetic symptoms (there werent any). I spoke to my Dr and convinced him to send me for a 2nd G.T,T (glucose test for diabetes). I came back alll clear and am now officially non diabetic. So, I am living proof that The Atkins diet can reverse onset diabetes, regardless of medical opinion, the diet works. So if you’re diabtic… There is hope, Start Fighting it!!

  24. mensacyclist says:

    If I were a …
    If I were a vegetarian I’d stop being a vegetarian.

  25. bowulf says:

    I don’t subscribe …
    I don’t subscribe to any low carb products during Induction -even Atkins bars or shakes. I would much prefer to start learning how to eat real foods rather than use these as a low carb crutch. They can cause stalls in a lot of people. Check out my net impact vs net carb video where I talk about this issue more fully.

    After Induction, you can decide for yourself after you gradually (1 per week) back into your diet. The same caution of stalls remains, but you will be able to determine for yrself.
